    Default index.html vs index.shtml

I recently created a website using .../index.shtml. I see in google analytics that I am getting more traffic on index.html than the intended landing page. Also, there is no index.html on the server. Does anyone know how this could happen? Thanks

Could be an issue with your server environment, but most likely it's an issue with Google analytics. As far as I've seen, shtml seems to be an issue. Check that it's correctly set up...

Do you think that people my actually be landing on a page that doesn't exist from a google search?

    No, just a reporting problem.

Did you use index.html before (eg. internal links back to your homepage)? If yes, Google might have indexed it.

Yes, I did use index.html originally and then changed it to index.shtml, but all links go to index.shtml.

What I don't understand is how I could get 20 hits on index.html yesterday (google analytics) when the file is not on the server. And I wonder if those hits are going to a 404 error?

I haven't created a site map as the site is only 4 pages.

http://dayscrabmeatandlobster.com/index.html goes to a 404 page, with the following content:
    "PAGE NOT FOUND

We cannot locate the page you're looking for. Please check the address and make sure all letters are lowercased with no spaces. You may also move to a different page by using the links in the menu bar above."

Some links might lead to this.

Yes, I have since set up a custom error page for the short term. I have also checked all four pages for any signs of index.html and can find none. Perhaps google indexed index.html before I had deleted it.

Also, in Google Webmaster Tools I am seeing only the internal links that I would like to see...no index.html

Do you know of any way to un-index the page with google?

Just time. As far as I can see, there's no Google cache to worry about.
