Hi,
Does anyone know why websites do well in google for certain territories and badly for others when they have a dot.com address?
I have noticed differences in google australia to google uk.

there are hundreds of defining factors including:
geotargetting of domains
IP location of server
link profile (links from certain countries)
relative bounce rates in certain countries
the list goes on and on, do you have a specific site you are working on that you want help with? if so post here and let us know!

This is because Google knows what deems important for researchers thus gives a specific result for someone who is researching on UK or Aust. But in SEO you can optimize your site for any target local. This sounds permissible but entails a lot of hardwork. If you want your site to rank both in google.co.uk and google.au then link to websites in those targeted country.
Maybe IP location is a factor but Google priorities the extention website address like "com.au" for Australia and "com.uk" for UK. So as you can see the result on search engines (local), there are many website that if you will search in Google Australia, a lot of ".com.au" are on the search result, also the same result as searching on other Google country search.
Hi,
One important story – beyond the scope of this assessment – would be to rank countries according to the amount of threatened forest lying outside frontiers. Such an index would be useful for identifying countries where unique forest ecosystems are on the verge of extinction.
Simple thing you have understand is Google providing better results. As MOGmartin mentioned all reasons for it.
why it happens?
If you want to purchase iphone and you are using co.uk that mean you like to purchase from UK site.
If Google shows some site from iran...Then you never gonna purchase from it.

The competitive landscape of a keyword varies from market to market, something that is very competitive in the UK, could be fairly easty to rank for in Australia. If you have a .com address and your hosting is not in your main market, you can use the DOCTYPE lang indicator to specify your home market, such as en-GB would indicate that your main market is the UK, as supposed to en-AU for Australia and en-US for the states.
[lang=sv]Google anpassar sin visning efter olika länder. Sverige har t ex google.se som skiljer sig från google.com. För att ranka bra i olika länder behvös många länkar från de länder du vill ranka högt på.[/lang]
