I have recently launched a website and have copied a lot of articles from other websites. My intention was to be able tomake my site an infromation hub and make it available for my visitors for their convenience. I have made sure I have backlinks on each of the articles to give credit and recognition to the authors/source of the articles. It seems that it can affect my site adversely as far as Google is concerned.

I intend to add a "noindex" code on the meta information to tag these articles as not for "robot" consumption but only for my human visitors. Is this going to work? Should it be "noindex,nofollow, instead of just "noindex"? Any other suggestion?

Yeah - it should work if those pages of your site are not already indexed. If already indexed - you can go to your webmaster account and try to remove them - though I'm not sure how successful you would be keeping in mind that Google tends to keep them forever.
Just do what you aught to do and pray.

If it's no index, then whether it's nofollow or not, googlebot won't see it because it won't index these pages and links. The only effect nofollow will have is that it will prevent the PR link juice from flowing into the noindex page. This might be a good idea because otherwise it would be a waste of PR juice as the bot will not be indexing these pages.
