There are many automation softwares for building links but I will recommend it to you as these may hurt your site ranking.

Join Facebook pages and groups with similar niches.. post your links there but dont spam.

It seems the "new way" to build links would be to make the old ways more efficient thus engineering a new method. It could be as simple as your basic SEO routine, turning into your basic SEO routine automated, giving you more time/resources to develop other ways. There are always new ways and everyday experts are coming up with ideas and incorporating new things that no one would of ever thought of to get backlinks.
