Could anybody specify how can list my site on dmoz. Is there any benchmark or technique. please mention here I am waiting for your positive reply

Just submit once and forget about it. DMOZ are not known for their prompt approval of your website to their directory.

possibly the handiest tip (ever) for getting indexed by DMOZ, (but before I reveal all, let me just say this):

I think that DMOZ is possibly the most overrated, useless form of linkbuilding known to mankind. It used to be good, and by "used to be" I mean circa 1996 at the latest. Its not totally full of spam. I should know, I used to be an editor.

[B]Anyway: how to get listed in DMOZ in a few months:

1) make sure your site is actually worthy.... seriously. not a rubbish site, something that genuinely deserves to be in its category.

2) do NOT - and I repeat do NOT submit your site.... SERIOUSLY - DONT DO IT!!

3) apply to be an editor.

4) you have to fill in a questionaire, as to why you think you should be an editor, and what category you want to be in. In that questionaire, list three sites that should be in the category, but arent (tip: search google for them!)

5) in the list of three sites, LIST YOUR OWN SITE.

[/B]thats it, shockingly simple I know, but Ive had over 10 sites listed in DMOZ by doing exactly this. And now Im giving the trick away for free, because, as I mentioned before, I think the whole thing is a bit of a waste of time, and too many people fixate on it!!!

in my opinion: dmoz is rubbish.

These days there are talks that DMOZ has thousands of dead/useless links since lots of Geocity pages were listed and it no longer exist. So DMOZ is a skeleton now. Sad to say this.

Submitting to dmoz used to be useful but it's an old technique. As menj said - submit and leave it. Concentrate on other types of link building instead.

The Open Directory Project or DMOZ is the most prominent website directory. It is basically an open content directory of worldwide web links. DMOZ is voluntarily maintained by different editors in all kinds of content category and niche. The scheme used by Open Directory Project in its site listings is the hierarchical ontology scheme. Who are the substitutes than? A top 5 biggest directories maybe?

I honestly dont feel that directory submission at all is worth it any more.

If you go back in time five years, every link counted, and there was some variance for site niche, maybe +/-5% of link strenght, but in my estimation the niche correlation between site linking and linked site is now more like 95% of overall link strength,

SO: if a site on your specific niche links to you its 20x (at least) more relevant to google than a link from a directory.

arguably, and infact logically, google should ignore links from pretty much every web directory apart from *maybe* industry specific authority directories, and in that case the directories themselves would be a closed shop, not open for submission.

Don't agree with this point in totality - but don't blame you or others who no longer have faith in them.
There has been so many people opening directories that - -- its now very hard to find a directory with genuine value.

Due to the directory craze - lots of people just buy adomain, dump a database and open it -- take just few mins.
Then they click on auto approve button and never care to really edit/review submitted sites and accept just about any site submitted. No wonder Google came down heavily on web directories couple of yrs back.

Once they see thatthere is no gold mine in the business - they change their sites into blogs or other without even bothering to care about the commitments they have to site owners.

I believe these days Google has learnt to differentiate between fly by the night directories and those with genuine commitments to the industry. I have written an article in on this subject covering some topics that concern web directories anddirectory submission -

Ialsostill have beliefsin directories because my very personal blog - related toeducation has very very high SERPs on lot os keywords/phrases and I just used web directories to build links for it. It has high ranking - ahead of lots of PR8/9 university sites for keyword like reading habit, cognitive development of achild etc. etc.

So, they arestill useful - provided one is very selected on which directory to submit to.

to what industry is that? the online directory owner's industry?

come one, that's total rubbish sorry!

My point is that no directories these days are worth bothering with because they are by their very nature not sites of any contectual value to the web. If they are just listings of other websites, they are in essence pointless.

Several years ago when the total number of links you had was paramount, you could do 10,000 directory submissions, and get about 3,000 to 4,000 backlinks in a month or so, that was very valuable then.

It isnt any more as google totally discounts spammy looking links, and links from directories ARE spammy looking links!

The caveat to this is very tightly niche focussed, well respected, manually built directories. But those directories probably dont even accept submission, as they are totally hand built.

You may be right - but I'm talking about from my own experience with my personal blog ( I'm a real life teacher - so I post mostly on education )

The blog gets around 71% of its traffic from search engines (though not much of traffic as I hardly find time for posts on it)- with only 130 links on GWMT account - 601 inlinks on Yahoo Siteexplorer. Most of those links are from FREE web directories and some from forums and blog-comments (no-follow).

so I may be wrong here jhnrang, but I dont think that the keywords that you are listing are particularly tough to get ranked on. Infact the site that I see in P1 on google.com is an inner page, and a PR0 on top of that.

Its my gut feeling that you would probably rank well for those keywords without the rubbish directory submissions in all honesty, purely on the strength of the content that you have on your website.

If you were to ask me now if I wanted 1000 links from directories, or 10 unique articles about my chosen niche, well, I would choose the content any day of the week, I genuinely feel that its more valuable, than those links!

On the other hand, if you were to offer me those same 10 unique articles, or just TWO links from respected sites on the same niche, well, Id take the links instead!

Its all about prioritizing in your head what you feel is important for the ranking of your site. That does vary depending on the competition surrounding the term you are targeting, but not hugely.

Yes - I know - I have great contents - but I don't think I could have ranked that high without those links purely on the basis of weight of contents alone. A site must have few links - it does not matter where they come from !

it is not a child's play. As I mentioned have very few links from other sites - most of my do-follow links come from FREE web directories. Also the keyword (education blog is quite competitive) - and my site ranks inside top 3 for that too.

So, my result made me come to the conclusion that -- although directories are not as valued as they were -- 4/5 years back, they still hold some values.

That's also what I think: even though directories are not what they were used to be, getting listed in major niche ones means only benefits for a specific websites. My 2 cents.

Dont worry - you normally get rejected, but leave it a while and see if the sites get added, thats what normally happens to me!
