Thread: is this the dumbest question ever posted ?? Trackbacks

Hi,

I have read info about trackbacks and pinging but the message isn't sinking in - in this forum when you start a new thread it has a box where you can put in up to 5 urls as "trackbacks" - OK so what exactly is a trackback and what benefit is there in entering the urls for some of my websites (not blogs) - does it count as a link? Should a website owner use these trackbacks every time they start a thread ?

I am one confused puppy on this issue.

Trackbacks are meant to notify a website when you are linking or referencing one of their pages. That's when you should use it.

Just what SEOserpent said. You'll probably have noticed them on WordPress blogs, usually shown alongside comments.

It's basically just a way of telling another site you've linked to it, and in the process, often getting yourself a backlink.

I'm just as confused as to what trackbacks are as well. Sounds kind of like RavenTools, but smarter.
