Default Does URL Structure Matter?

Would there be any difference at all in SEO value between the 2 URL structures below. I am mostly concerned about Google SEO.

mydomain.com/1234/some-page-slug

or

mydomain.com/some-page-slug/1234

The page slug contains the relevant information about the page and I was wondering if Google gives more weight to information found closer to the start of the URL. Does this even matter?

Url structure matter in SEO. Google reads dynamic url slowly. Your sites url must contain your main keyword. This helps in improving your sites rank.

I have read that it's better to keep your URLs short and sweet and to feature the page-specific keyword as close to your domain name as possible. So your second example would be better.

URL Structure is one of the most important keys to 'beginning' the process of optimization. The URL must point to lots of original information related to it's structure... or the URL will eventually be disregarded. Text is much more important in the long run. If you build a great site with non descriptive url's it will eventually rise in rank regardless of the URL's.

Google is programmed with increasingly 'human' traits - it loses interest after the first components of your URL, so keep keywords at the beginning.

My two cents...

URL Structure certainly matters. It isn't a magic bullet, though.

Shorter is better. Try to keep everything no more than 3 deep.

Use keywords to the degree it makes sense semantically. Sometimes the URL will have to suffice as anchor text, and we all know the value of keyword based anchor text.

The closer to the main URL the better. And it should be really relevant too to the content on the page. Without giving more explanations here's a short answer:

mydomain.com/some-page-slug/1234 is better

Hi,

This point is being made by more people than ever but it seems to be trapped within the thought circles of the SEO community. The difference between a crawlable site and a crawl-inhibiting site structure is most easily measured through cache data freshness. Keep in mind that search engines don’t necessarily recache your page every time they fetch it, but the more often your deep content is recached, the more likely that your site has good crawlability.

Always use static URLs to get favor of the search engines. Segregate your URLs based on each and every web page theme and also estimate one most important keyword for each page of your site. Then, try to incorporate your targeted keyword in the beginning of the URL ASAP. For inner pages, the URL structure should be as follows:

Placing Keywords on the left (near the root) is the best solution. But I think URLs Rewriting doesn't help much in ranking.

Hello

I agree with you URLs rewriting will not help in ranking your website. You must have a perfect url which will help you to get higher ranking

There are two types of Url Structure
1. Static URL structure
2. Dynamic URL structure

Static url are easy to handle by search engine. and keywords used in a url that is important for ranking. While dynamic urls' because of symbols used to serve pages, can cause search engines to ignore them or return bad search results.

Vital and not so much. PHP has been a factor in the online world for a lot of time now, so dynamic url's will be happily indexed by Google, no questions asked. More important are a good title and description. User friendly url's will be of a bigger help tough in clickthrough, and will increase maybe direct traffic. Keep in mind tough, that some types of sites will suffer from these friendly url's, simply because of the load it has on the server. So huge sites, like big forums, will tend to not bother. And I haven't seen evidence that they're in disadvantage.
