A search engine's goal is to provide precision and recall in their search engine results, irregardless of seo attempts and the dissonance of language/meaning...preferably using automated methods. Their problem isn't exclusive to the web, but to information retrieval in general.

Understanding current information retrieval methods can help you get the bigger picture... over the years a number of patents and publications have been discussed here. The Google forum here at WebmasterWorld contains a decade of threads from top seo's discussing some of the finer points of seo and the broadish spectrum of approaches seo use.

Links are considered as the 'bread and butter' of seo.
